I often find that as an entrepreneur we can stray off course very quickly, especially with how we market ourselves. We start out strong with a great plan, then we lose focus or have no clue what to do next. When that happens we could lose our identity and confuse potential customers. Here are a few tips on keeping your marketing focused on your message:

1. Keep your vision and mission in front of you:

No matter what you’re doing always ask yourself if it coincides with your mission. Is this something I want to be remembered for? As a business owner, it can be easy to start off strong and then quickly lose focus on our original goals. Yes, it’s ok to branch out and do new things, but make sure you establish and perfect those things that are working for you.

2. Test your marketing strategies early on in the process:

Find what works and be consistent with it. Sometimes we can get lost trying to do too many things at once. Take it step by step. Focus on your target market and keep feeding the demand. Check off what’s working and eliminate what’s not. Get used to using analytics to help drive the direction your business needs to move in. There are plenty of great analytics tools out there such as Google Analytics, Clicky, or Chartbeat. Find the tool that works best for you and the data to your advantage.

3. Don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing:

We watch other’s marketing strategies and end up copying exactly what they are doing instead of seeing how to apply it correctly for our brand. It’s ok to learn and watch what others are doing in your industry, but don’t fall into the trap of being a copycat. I have seen this happen time and time again where businesses or ministries have followed a pattern so closely that they begin to lose their identity. This can lead to serious burnout and frustration. It is important to have people around you that keep you accountable. Whether it’s a partner, coach, or mentor there should someone involved that helps keep you focused and on track.
